Bone Mineral Density testing
DXA
The Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, or DXA (pronounced “DEXA”), is considered the gold standard among many types of bone density testing and is the preferred choice for repeat testing every 1-2 years. This painless, noninvasive scan is simple and only takes a few minutes to complete. During a DXA scan, the radiation level is less than one tenth of the dose in a standard X-ray, and 50% less than natural routine daily activities radiation exposure. At AOA we are equipped to conduct this procedure and our team of rheumatologists will interpret and evaluate the results to determine the best course of action.
Vertebral Fracture Assessment (VFA)
VFA’s are performed as part of the bone density scan to detect any fracture of the spine.
